The Government of Uganda officially commissioned the long-awaited Nyagak III Hydropower  Plant, a modern electricity generation facility with a capacity of 6.6 megawatts, situated in the Zombo District of the West Nile sub-region. The plant was inaugurated by the Minister of  Energy and Mineral Development, Hon. Dr. Ruth Nankabirwa Sentamu, who hailed the project  as a major stride toward improving energy access and reliability in the region.

With an overall investment of approximately USD 20 million, the Nyagak III project represents  a significant achievement in the country’s broader energy infrastructure development agenda.  The plant is expected to play a transformative role in addressing the region’s long-standing  electricity deficits, which have for years hindered social and economic progress in the West  Nile sub-region. Once operating at full capacity, the facility will provide clean, renewable energy  to thousands of households and businesses, facilitating local enterprise, healthcare services,  education, and other essential sectors.

Beyond its immediate functional benefits, the hydropower plant also advances Uganda’s efforts  to achieve Sustainable Development Goal 7 (SDG 7), which aims to ensure universal access to  affordable, reliable, sustainable, and modern energy by 2030. By harnessing the power of the  Nyagak River through environmental responsibility, the project contributes to a greener energy  mix and a more sustainable future for Uganda.

Developed through a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, the Nyagak III Hydropower  Project is being implemented by a consortium that includes the Uganda Electricity Generation  Company Limited (UEGCL), Hydromax Limited, and DOTT Services Limited. The consortium  operates under a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) known as Genmax Nyagak Ltd, which was  established to oversee the design, financing, construction, and management of the plant.

This milestone sets the stage for enhanced socio-economic development in the West Nile  region and signals the government’s continued commitment to supporting infrastructure-led  growth throughout Uganda.
