Karuma Hydropower plant- An Engineering Fet Finally Commissioned (NV)
Overview
The Karuma Hydropower Plant in Uganda was officially commissioned on September 26, 2024. With a 600 MW capacity, it is Uganda’s largest power-generating facility and Africa’s largest underground hydropower plant. Built by Sinohydro Corporation at a cost of $1.7 billion funded 85% by the EXIM Bank of China and 15% by the Ugandan government the plant features a run-of-river design with six 100 MW vertical Francis turbines located 100 meters underground. This milestone increases Uganda’s total energy capacity to over 2,000 MW, supporting the country’s Vision 2040 goals and strengthening its national electricity infrastructure.
