Challenges and prospects of powering Uganda to 52,000 MW

Challenges and prospects of powering Uganda to 52,000 MW

Overview

Uganda aims to expand its electricity generation capacity to 52,000 MW by 2040, a target aligned with national development goals and global per-capita electricity benchmarks. Achieving this ambitious goal presents both opportunities and challenges. Key challenges include ensuring adequate investment, modernizing transmission and distribution infrastructure, stimulating industrial demand, and expanding rural electrification.

At the same time, prospects are significant. With strategic government support, private sector participation, regional cooperation, and innovative financing models, Uganda has the potential to not only meet domestic energy needs but also position itself as a regional power hub, driving socio-economic transformation and supporting sustainable development.
